  • Botox® Injections

Botox injections are very well suited to lines created by dynamic movement, for example those lines across a forehead, smile lines, or mouth wrinkles. To truly rejuvenate the face you and your physician need to consider the cause of the wrinkles and fine lines that trouble you. Botox is a great choice for these dynamic wrinkles and has been proven to be highly effective at reducing the appearance of these types of lines.

    What Botox Does

Botox, or botulinum toxin, works to relax muscles and prevent them from moving. It is a protein made by the bacteria, clostridium botulinum. Originally it was used for ophthalmologic purposes such as in children with a “wandering eye” to relax the muscles pulling the eyes apart. Eventually its aesthetic application was discovered by Canadian husband/wife physicians Dr. Alistair and Jean Caruthers

    What Botox Can Treat

Botox has clearance from the FDA to treat the glabellar, frown lines and hyperhidrosis. It is also often used to treat muscle spasms, muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy.

The most common use for Botox is for treatment of the forehead and smile lines. Brow lines that are prominent on the forehead can be relaxed using Botox, as well as other lines of movement. Lines between the eyes may also be treated with Botox. Depressed or sagging eyebrows may also be effectively treated.

Botox is sometimes used to relax muscles around the lips to improve lines. This requires careful application as too much Botox can prevent movement of the mouth. It is also used frequently to relax the platysma muscle. Some people with thin skin on the neck have these tightened bands of skin on the neck caused by the platysma muscle in the neck. Injections may be used in the neck to relax it.

Botox is often used in conjunction with lasers and fillers to address the signs of photo-aging or sun induced aging of the skin.

    Injections Needed Regularly

Botox treatment is not permanent. The results from Botox will wear off after a few months. Some see this as a drawback as it requires the regular reinjection of Botox and the associated cost of this. On the other hand if a patient is not pleased with the treatment, it will not last forever. In the next treatment session, the patient is able to give feedback to their physician about what they didn’t like and have it corrected

    Botox Side Effects

Botox is a safe and effective treatment when used in accordance with FDA approved procedures. Side effects from Botox are generally minor, if they occur at all. Your doctor should talk with you about any possible risks associated with treatment from Botox.

A common side effect is over-treatment, which can cause an undesirable level of immobilization of the muscles. This will fade as the impact of the treatment wears off. Other side effects which have been reported are:

    • Nausea
    • Muscle Weakness
    • Drooping eyelids
    • Pain in the Face
    • Heartburn/Indigestion
    • Tooth Problems
    • Hypertension/High Blood Pressure
    • Dry Mouth
    • Bleeding at the site of injection
    • Sore Throat
    • Soreness are the site of injection

Some side effects may indicate an allergic reaction such as a rash, hives, swelling or wheezing/difficulty breathing

Seek out medical attention immediately should you experience these or any other side effects.
