How It Works
PurTox uses a form of botulinum toxin that is purer than that in Botox, claims its manufacturer, Mentor Corp. The toxin temporarily blocks the muscle contractions that lead to the formation of dynamic wrinkles (the ones that form as a result of facial movements). As those muscles relax, the skin above them is able to smooth out.
Early clinical trials suggest that PurTox may, as a result of its higher purity, be slightly more effective and perhaps last longer than Botox. Those properties won’t be known for sure, however, until the product receives FDA approval.
Mentor Corp. suggests that PurTox may, like Dysport, spread more than Botox does when injected—and thus be able to treat a wider area with fewer injections. In clinical trials, 5 injections were given to treat frown lines, but the company seems to suggest that as few as three may actually be needed.
Same Side Effects
PurTox appears to present the same possible side effects as both Botox and Dysport: some temporary bruising, redness and swelling. If it’s true that PurTox spreads a bit further at the treatment site, it may, like Dysport, pose a slightly higher risk than Botox of causing ptosis (a drooping eyelid). When ptosis does occur, however, it’s usually cleared up within a few weeks. Still, this possible side effect is one of many reasons you should always seek cosmetic care through a reputable and experienced physician’s office.
