Plastic Surgery

Facial rejuvenation isn’t strictly limited to non-surgical techniques. Plastic surgery like brow lifts and facelifts still provide some of the most consistent, dramatic results for those with sagging skin and deep wrinkles, often in conjunction with laser treatment.

Most people are already familiar with the basic idea of a facelift or rhytidectomy, which is to lift and tighten sagging skin on the face. Facelifts are especially effective at treating deep creases below the eyes, lines between the nose and mouth, and excess skin that hangs from the chin and jaw. In order to tighten skin, a plastic surgeon makes an incision in the hairline. The incision starts at the temple and moves downward below the ear, then back to the area behind the ear. Fat can be redistributed from here, and muscle and tissues repositioned to better sculpt the face. Excess skin is then trimmed away before the incision is closed. Most patients will experience swelling and bruising that will subside within 2-4 weeks, with results improving for up to two months.

Brow lifts, also known as forehead lifts, are similar in procedure to facelifts. However, while facelifts treat the entire face, brow lifts improve only the upper part of the face. Brow lifts are good for people who want to improve “frown lines” or creases on the forehead, lift a sagging brow, or raise eyebrows that have sunken down over the years. Unlike a facelift, which uses a single, long incision, brow lifts usually begin with several small incisions along the hairline. Skin is “lifted” in the same manner as a facelift, with excess skin being trimmed prior to the closure of the incisions. A 2-4 week period of bruising and swelling is common, with incision lines continuing to fade for up to one year.
